Brilliant… Miliband welcomed to Foreign Office by civil servant walkout First of three days of strike action over plans to cut workforce takes place Hundreds of civil servants have begun strike action over job cuts at the Foreign Office in Ed Miliband’s first week in the department. Mr Miliband, originally tipped to become chancellor in Andy Burnham’s new government, was appointed Foreign Secretary on Monday. However, his first week has been hit with walkouts and threats of working to rule over plans to cut up to 2,000 jobs within the department. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) announced plans last year to make cuts of between 15 and 25 per cent from its workforce over the next four years. The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) balloted its members on strike action last month over the department’s failure to rule out compulsory redundancies. It staged its first day of strike action on Wednesday and has announced two further strike days on Aug 12 and 26. Work to rule will also be in place throughout August.
